NECCTON Ocean Viewer – Explore, analyse, and share marine data

NECCTON Ocean Viewer

The NECCTON Ocean Viewer is now live — a new gateway into next‑generation marine ecosystem data. This interactive platform brings together cutting‑edge models, satellite observations and environmental indicators to help you explore how the ocean is changing, from plankton to pollutants.

What is it?

A powerful, cloud‑based data portal that visualises and distributes NECCTON's new ecosystem products. Built on the trusted Copernicus MyOcean viewer framework, it offers intuitive tools for mapping, plotting, comparing and downloading marine data across space and time.

What does it contain?

A growing collection of marine ecosystem datasets, including:

  • Lower trophic levels (e.g., plankton biomass and underwater light)
  • Higher trophic levels (e.g., fish and marine mammals distributions)
  • Benthic communities (e.g. mussels and seagrass)
  • Environmental stressors (e.g. microplastics and climate change indexes)

These next‑generation variables provide a more complete picture of ocean food webs and environmental pressures — many of which are not yet available through the Copernicus Marine Service catalogue.

Who is it for?

The viewer is designed for anyone working with, studying, or making decisions about the ocean, including:

  • Marine scientists and students
  • Policymakers and ocean managers
  • Conservation organisations
  • Blue economy stakeholders
  • Anyone interested in understanding how the marine environment is changing

What can you do with it?

Explore & Visualise

Create custom maps, time series and animations with just a few clicks.

Analyse

Compare model outputs and observations to reveal trends and ecosystem responses.

Download

Access datasets in various formats for deeper analysis.

Share

Export images, graphics, or links to support research, communication and decision‑making.

Why it matters

By integrating advanced ecosystem models with real‑world observations, the NECCTON Ocean Viewer helps understand how climate change, pollution and human activity affect marine life. It supports improved biodiversity conservation, sustainable fisheries management and evidence‑based ocean policy.
